Sex and the City’s 20-Year Anniversary: The 34 Most Memorable Looks

20 years. It’s been 20 years since Sex and the City made its way through our TVs. You know, when we still had to be in front of our screens, on the right day at the right time, to watch our favourite shows. Or program our VHS hoping that our tech skills wouldn’t let us down.

I’ve watched Sex & the City from beginning to end for the first time about a year ago, so 19 years after the pilot first aired. Like anything, there are good and less good moments, but overall, it’s seven seasons of pure wonders. It’s funny, it’s touching, it makes you think, it’s shocking (for that time and especially Samantha) and most of all, the clothes and the styling are BEYOND amazing. I think we can all agree that part of SATC’s success relies on the incredible — and sometimes, yes, laughable — outfits of Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda.

We have to thank Patricia Field, the show’s stylist, for all of those legendary fashion moments, who was actually hired after the first episode, because nobody was happy with the clothes then. The one who later became the costume designer for The Devil Wears Prada is also the brain behind all the unforgettable looks of Sarah Jessica Parker which, by the way, are way too expensive for someone earning a living by writing ONE column a week, but eh, dreaming never hurt anybody! «It was more about style than fashion design — a real person’s wardrobe, but with imagination», said the stylist during an interview with Man Repeller in May.

That’s exactly where the power of Sex and the City’s styling took root: the clothes kept switching back and forth from dream to reality. They inspired as much the viewers as they made the characters come to life.

So to celebrate the show’s 20-year anniversary, I fast forwarded through the seven seasons (do I love you or what?!) to find all the best looks. You’ll see, you’d still wear 75% of them. Also, the pictures are mostly of Carrie and Samantha, because Charlotte was too preppy and Miranda to corporate normcore to my personal tastes. But anyways, I loved them for other reasons. Enjoy!
