-You can’t go out like that! It’s -22ºC outside!
-Ugh, mom. It’s no big deal. I’ll be fine.
And just like that, my 16-year-old self would walk out of my parents’ house with a barely-there cropped puffer coat wearing Converse. Not the fancy ones lined with shearling; the ones made with cotton canvas which were basically like wearing flip flops in the middle of winter. Warmth was not my priority, clearly. Coolness was.
Maybe times have changed or perhaps I’m just getting older, but COME ON! How could I possibly leave the house like that?! Today, I refuse to leave my apartment unless I’m wearing 22 layers of wool and polar fleece, which basically leaves me hopeless style-wise from December to April.
But like I mentioned above, there’s been a shift lately in our collective approach to winter wear. It’s not cool to be cold anymore. That change is obvious from looking at the popularity of multi-layering, but also from seeing all those new coats mixing both comfort and style. Here are 10 that are not only warm and beautiful, they’re also from companies that put the environment and good production practices at the forefront of their raison d’être.
*I’m aware that wool coats are not the best when it’s -30ºC outside. However, if I can give you one piece of advice this winter, it’s this: get yourself a compact and super warm jacket! You know, those thin sports jackets you wear underneath your regular coat? I’ve had one for the past two years and it literally changed my life. I wear it underneath all my fall coats and it instantly transforms them into winter-appropriate gear.
